Cabide DJ on Mofo Radio
Sample machines, in the case the Akai MPC, are the main instruments in the production of hip/hop music. Rap came about because there was a bunch of kids in very poor areas who wanted to make music, but didn’t have the means to do so - no instruments, no nothing. So they began to raid their parents’ record collections. Now, they didn’t have access to a horn section or a drum kit, but artists like James Brown did, and so they would find “breaks” in these records where only the drum was being hit or only the horn was tooting, and they rearranged it all to make something new. Machines like the Akai MPC came along and made arranging these sounds easier.
What we have in this video is some dude doing a Girl Talk-ish live set on an MPC. He is obviously extremely fast and extremely good at making music on this thing. It is doubly enjoyable because he’s doing so on a device that is probably very foreign to you, but is creating music that is slightly familiar. You will fucking love it.
Tim, I only wish I had these kinda skills on the beat machine.
